An art master&nbsp;in Dundee, Coatbridge, Arbroath and Edinburgh, he influenced the course of art education across Scotland. In a parallel career, he was not only a noted landscape artist but a writer and publisher and a leading member of the Arts and Crafts movement in Scotland. He designed furniture and was a fine craftsman in gesso and metalwork.
